The standard concept of the Buddha was formulated in the mature Gupta period that led eventually to one of the truly great Buddha figure of all time, accepted throughout the entire Buddhist world. It is as if Gupta art all earlier attempts to render the Buddha are characterized, and developed to full maturity, for this reason it became the classical model over such extensive areas of Asia.

The Gupta type of figures evolved clearly on the basis of Mathura art including certain Gandhara art elements. Gupta artists were able to create a sense of perfect tranquility and profound meditative figure, which gives an impression of weightlessness; it is compact but, the curves of the robe, which flow together, give it absolute harmony.
